the meaning of "based" is typically rendered as "being yourself and not caring what other people think", but imo "caring but not being unduly influenced by" is a truer form of basedness

Hmmm interesting, but how do you get past the fact that you can never really understand how other people think about you, making it an almost pointless concern?

it's fine to mostly just concern yourself with what they do you the honor of clearly expressing i think

I can strongly agree with that provided it is slightly more restricted to those who successfully appear sincere and unmotivated by bias.

the insincere and biased have their own relevance. caring about tactical impact is a kind of caring

It is a form of caring, but is it really a form of caring that would be included in the connotations of based?

hm, gonna say yeah. "the opinions of the insincere and biased are of strictly tactical significance to me" sounds based

That does, but that also sounds 'uncaring' in a cold and emotionless way that seems to divide the matter.

Perhaps based means to be unemotional about what people think of you instead of to be uncaring.

i feel like the word itself implies (or maybe just fucking denotes) a solid base emotional state that others' opinions cannot readily perturb, with the (accurate) implication that many people's emotional states are easily kicked around by external feedback (positive or negative)

so perhaps the based individual may react emotionally, just not in a destabilizing way
