Fuck, it's totally implausible that alien life with a totally foreign evolutionary history would be edible. Everybody handwaves it and I guess I'm going to have to too, but it hurts.

Yea, mushrooms have near-zero nutritional value tho, while we can properly digest cephalopod protein, I think? The question is, would alien life coevolve protein similar to ours? Speculating on aliens that wouldn't use 'normal' aminoacids is way above my level of knowledge...

The whole situation is necessarily speculative, but I'm not even comfortable assuming the presence of protein at all. Or, fuck, even a carbon basis. Hard to imagine the range of possibilities from just one example.
