the whole "having primary and secondary partners is bad" thing would be a definite point of attack, all multiphilic relationships would have formally defined hierarchy where everybody knows where they stand, with tertiary partners, quaternary partners, whatever it takes

Or maybe it's descriptive rather than prescriptive, then you can keep the hierarchy but also have everyone insecure about constantly fluctuating status in a really overt way
