I think that largely depends on the stranger. Like, where I live there was a case when a guy stole a couple's baby, demanded ransom, accidentally killed the baby, still took the ransom, got caught but was released because he's too young to prosecute. I'd rather save a tree.

I'm agnostic on trees vs people, but I'll point out that there are around 500 trees for each person on the planet today. So you'd be talking hundreds to thousands of trees at par.
