i don’t want to spoil anything but there were moments in Dark Phoenix that just felt so important. and Jean’s struggle to come to terms with her newfound power has obvious parallels to life under patriarchy that the movie leaned into in a beautiful way

i mean she gets told she’s “too emotional”. she’s so powerful she’s a threat to the men in her life. it really examines the relationship she had with Charles, which y’know, always WAS kind of weird because telepaths and he rescued her as a child!!

It stands completely alone as a Marvel movie since it's set in the 90s. It has a lot of characters that recur in the series, but this would be their first appearance chronologically. The things you say you like about Dark Phoenix are explored there, too.

my sense is that they wound up distressingly muddling the throughline from the nonconsensual psychic compartmentalization to "my emotions make me strong" because it was too similar to Captain Marvel :(

hmm for me it didn’t feel muddled, from “you’re not broken” to the line about emotions made sense i thought? i haven’t seen Capt Marvel so idk. it was dense with subtext (for a superhero movie). i read it as “working through trauma looks messy but makes you stronger”

like the deal with repression and patriarchal norms, right, is always that showing emotion is a weakness and you’re supposed to just suck it up and soldier on, not let it get to you, all that. and she kinda buys that for awhile? “control” powers looks like “repress”..

..lock it down, build walls, don’t feel the feelings. because it will hurt the people around you. and then we come to see that as X overprotecting in a way that left her worse off. so like, feeling the feelings is good. is how you process and heal. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

They really, REALLY want you to know that it’s happening in the 90s.
