So under this model, depression is caused by [lack of some neurotransmitter or something] and then has the effect of making a belief more accurate? That would be either very coincidental bias-balancing, or depression somehow destroys a self-delusion process/module.

slight correction: I wouldn't say an aggressive hyper-refinement to the detriment of well-being is an _improvement_, specifically, but yeah, that's one of the symptoms all right
