i think this really does undercut whatever the least-snarl word is for "letting people have different modes of existence", though. like, tolerance only for the right people saying the right things is obviously an utterly shitty version of tolerance

All of those scenes in books and movies and stories where the previously invincible villain suddenly discovers they are overmatched by the hero and challenges them not to use their newfound strength as a matter of honor are basically about this.
