problems i've solved where: a clever algorithm was important: 1% an iterative testing-based approach was important: 99% technical interviews i've had that tested my competence with: clever algorithms: 100% iterative testing-based approaches: 0%

reminds me of the interviews I've had where we discussed my TDD habits for 15-20 minutes and then I was asked to write code on a whiteboard "...can I use an IDE? we all have laptops?" blew everyone's mind (the answer was no, of course)

"All our code is developed on whiteboards, we just take pictures and OCR the pictures before compiling. Uh, how's your printing, pretty clear?"

I've never quite had the gumption to ask an interviewer "so, do you folks deploy from whiteboards a lot?"

I find that walking into interviews with the idea that *they* have to win *me* over and I'm the one doing the interviewing is remarkably freeing. Drop this one sometime and see how it goes.

if there's anything the life and times of Donald Trump should teach us, it's that if you act like a big shot, some percentage of people will just believe you

If we failed to learn that lesson from Ferris Bueller I am not sure we can. I've used that method a number of times and it basically just works.

it was kind of my entire social strategy in my late teens and twenties, and disgustingly successful i hope the reason i mostly stopped using it is that i like myself better not using it, not some kind of idiotic authenticity fetish
