the only really bad effect of everybody trying to be a musician is the proliferation of the idea that music having technical structure that makes it not boring to musicians also makes it good music, which it does not

the amount of hands involved in one piece of popular music is insane, and they are not hacks. producers, engineers, co-writers. these are all trained, highly capable individuals. is that not technical?

if you can find me an example of an artist that is making music that is not technical that is popular - the only objective metric that we can have in this discussion - i'll by all means reconsider my feelings on the matter

i'm not objecting to music being technically well produced. please, by all means. it's the stuff that musicians turn to when they've heard too much music i'm talking about, like Philip Glass and powernoise and Birdy Nam Nam

I could've lived without ever hearing of Birdy Nam Nam, but now I have. It's a cruel world we live in.

if it helps you feel better, I listened to philip glass and that's slightly tolerable, if only because it sounds like the late classical period meets a broken record of hanz zimmer playing piano
