the severity of the common error of mistaking behavior for purpose is easily illustrated by the example of the spoon: it spends most of its time sitting in a drawer, but that's not what it's for

What specific situations do you see this error being made in, with consequences bad enough to make pointing out the error worthwhile?

the way i got to the tweet wasn't really about observing any problems or remedying them, so i could make something up to fit (i mean, just look at the way people talk about evolution) but it wouldn't be any better than anything you made up to fit

Must note that the purpose of a great many spoons is to sit in the drawer. For hoarders, having is what matters.

But doth the purpose lieth in the object, or in the subject, asketh the sage,

Despite that, a spoon that was no good at sitting in a drawer would be almost as useless as a spoon that couldn't serve its primary purpose

I thought the purpose of the spoon is to provide baselinehu with a metaphor to obliquely express the limitations of their physiologyhttps://twitter.com/0K_ultra/status/1094325366443909123 …

"You know the spoon metaphor, one about how some people have only so much effort to expend towards tasks before rest is needed?" "Yes" "I think I get your thing, you don't have spoons... you just have a knife" "Two" "Two what?" "I have two knives and a bayonet" #contextfree pic.twitter.com/hSwe6ou1lG

I am more concerned with the implication of sentient flatware outside of a Disney animated musical.

purpose is given not intrinsic. A spoon may be intended for eating, but prince John would use it to cut out people's hearts.

the spoon is an exmpl of the "error", saying "that's not what its for" defines the spoons purpose, using this example implies purpose is defined by an external factor and not by the individual, maybe that's true, maybe we are all mindless robots waiting to be given purpose 🤷🏽‍♀️
