yeah, i feel like i'd need to understand about a thousand things ten thousand times better to talk not out my ass about it but it'd be interested if we had a situation where the "organized crime" group isn't competing for the violence monopoly because they've *licensed* it

I actually think it’s an interesting area to explore because of the topology of organized crime. Your initial point makes sense w/ re: narco groups…& that might relate more to the actual *land* they need to occupy for production

i feel like the knots Japanese culture tied itself in around the concept of violence after 1945 has a lot of bearing too

i imagine, but it seems like having a government that would basically like nothing better than to wash their hands of the violence monopoly would inflect things pretty significantly

That’s why I say the Yakuza might be a counter-example as they were sanctioned to use violence in certain areas, but exceeding that area would definitely bring down the official government..

...I mean...if you ever spend enough time in Japan’s nightlife those demarcation zones of who uses violence *legitimately* on who is very clear.

Nonetheless I think there are different roles that organized crime can take given the spaces open for it within a given society. But on one level across many societies it does something the state wants done without being seen to do it.
