organized crime will always fail when it does not understand itself to be a nascent governmental structure challenging the established one for the violence monopoly, which can lead to thinking that the two can coexist from this we see what we call successful organized crime
i imagine, but it seems like having a government that would basically like nothing better than to wash their hands of the violence monopoly would inflect things pretty significantly

That’s why I say the Yakuza might be a counter-example as they were sanctioned to use violence in certain areas, but exceeding that area would definitely bring down the official government..

...I mean...if you ever spend enough time in Japan’s nightlife those demarcation zones of who uses violence *legitimately* on who is very clear.
