this is a really good point: there's an undertone of "you should adopt my values" in cases i see and to that i just say fuck that

My problem is that I've definitely seen people react exactly this way to requests not to misgender people or to stop using racial slurs, including using exactly this argument to defend it.

personally that falls into the "negotiable" category for me, e.g. I usually don't blaspheme around ppl i know to be christians if it's a request to stop it in all contexts, however...

Case in point, I've now written you off as someone I want to continue interacting with.

kinda seems like you applied the prescription for someone who claims the right to do X in all circumstances to someone who claims the right to do X in any circumstances tho

I prefer not to interact with people who see not misgendering people/not using racial slurs as being as unreasonable as Christian blasphemy taboos. Alternatively, if the crux is "what if a demon says you have to say the N word or they kill 100 babies?", nothing of value was lost.

tbh i read the blasphemy thing as an example of willingness to work with much less reasonable asks, but enh, it'll all be 0K in the end

I read it as (uncharitable, but I believe accurate) "oh you silly SJWs, of course I'll observe your ridiculous norms when I'm in your territory and not doing so might come with a faction-specific reputational cost"

that does seem uncharitable but idk, maybe you know more about that human than i do
