The more parsimonious explanation is that those stories are bullshit.

the one i'm thinking of is completely plausible tbh if there's bullshit involved it was the guy pretending he didn't have it before which, enh, he ain't really that deep

There may be a disconnect here. To me "suddenly developing a theory of mind" means e.g. developing gestural communication or that sort of thing, not "realizing when you yell at someone they might not like it" or whatever.

oh, no, i mean stumbling on the idea that other people have desires and goals like you do rather than being oddly shaped pieces of lumber that move in particular directions if poked in particular ways

Theory of mind is just more efficient and effective implementation of poke-to-lumber-movement model :p

I'd say it's a bit on the overrated side and models of mind built up from one's own introspective template have sources of unreliability / dangerous pitfalls that are unique to MoMs of this kind... even before you account for introspection being unreliable crap

very few people take "other minds are not like my mind" seriously.

I'd say sometimes people who just model others as weird lumber are both more efficient team members and generally less dangerous to their peers. People who assume you want same shit they want because they want it and they have a mind and you have a mind can be a real BLIGHT

shocking that you of all people would prefer the platinum rule to the golden rule

There are whole classes of (per their self-report) golden-rule compliant agents that are direct threat to my preferences, goals and interests.

The golden rule reduces to the platinum rule as the accuracy of your ToM goes to 1, since if you had the other person's mind, you'd want treated accordingly. In this sense the "platinum rule" is just a reminder that other people's minds are different
