it's funny that the "positive" and "negative" in positive and negative reinforcement are in the cybernetics sense (whether something is being added or removed) and you can't even find somebody *with a degree in psychology* who isn't reflexively reading them as "nice" and "mean"

they don't even try to talk about positive punishment and negative punishment in textbooks even though the distinction is just as meaningful there because people's brains just grind to a halt on the phrases

They talk about it in terms of pos/neg reinforcement. But you're right. It's practiced terribly.
