the problem with leftism being similar to religious belief isn't that defiant conviction is a bad thing, quite the contrary really, but that it tends to become a source of comfort and secure identification in the present rather than a drive towards its practical overcoming

otoh there's also a form leftism where the whole idea of radicalization is that there's a chain reaction or evolutionary process of demystification kicked off by an initial saying of "eppur si muove" to a reigning ideological mystification

there's a certain type of doctrinaire Marxist that's esp depressing bc they obviously had some good critical instincts once but having successfully swapped out one orthodoxy for the other they said "job done" and lost them like a sessile barnacle eating its own brain
