while i'm doing threads, let's dive into something i've never really talked about: the main way i think psychopathy works. which afaik is completely at odds with the literature, though i avoid the literature as a train wreck mostly concerned with demonization so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(looking forward to some psychological professionals popping in to tell me i'm full of shit, with an outside chance of also telling me that everything i have to say is obviously cribbed from some obscure but well-established corner of that literature i've been dodging)

the reason i'm motivated to try to understand psychopaths in a non-demonizing way, incidentally, is that on balance i like and enjoy them, thinking that they should get to have good lives and that the rest of us have valuable things to learn from them

so: where i think a psychopath starts is as someone whose primary neurodivergence is that their mirror neurons work *extremely well*. like, Olympic well. so well that they experience other people's emotional states overwhelmingly, yanking them around like a collar and leash

this is cool but if we grant some people have very strong mirror neurons like in this theory, implies some have v weak ones relatively - couldnt they just be the psychos?

maybe? but it has poor explanatory power for the frequency of coincidence of high-outlier people reading skills but also perfectly likely more than one underlying mechanism gets to a similar place, which is why i was careful to say "main way"

yeah - that's a good point. typically now they divide things btween 'cognative empathy' and emo empathy, but thats always seemed a bit dubious to me imo the simplest is just that psychopaths aren't good empathisers, but reading people is much easier in some ways if you arent

Somewhere along the way "understanding people" became synonymous with "listening to their life story, buying their book, and agreeing everything they do is right". Rather than "accurately predicting movement". One of these is lower resolution and objectively easier to handle.
