/ Lately, I've been revisiting lots of ideas I once held and now reject. I'm not doing so to keep a superficially "open mind." The world is an open sewer of shit ideas right now, and they don't deserve constant reevaluation. Instead, I'm trying to find...missing components.https://twitter.com/generativist/status/1106634476044632065 …

/ It's not big in ML but the chapter on concept learning in Mitchell (1997) always stuck out in my head. I'm worried that, when bad faith actors stake out claims to some ideas, abstractly nearby important ones fall into a zone of deterrence, rendering them inaccessible.pic.twitter.com/1tQfDy4val

/ The current info env makes this malignant because there are so many bad faith actors. The set of instances and socially-negated ones (ie it's obviously not true because alt-edgelord said it) narrows concept spaces which increasingly fail to cover anything resembling reality.

/ Affective processing is generally useful. But within the funhouse of fuckery, it hallucinates an ever-expanding set of concepts that are wrong in ways the tends to generate and induce even more errors. 5/ Callout culture is the one that's been intruding in my mind the most lately. Social condemn is necessary -- it's baked into how we process information! But, surely there is such a thing as too much, right?https://twitter.com/generativist/status/1106545527754313728 …

Tools that help find the balance in allocating justifiable outrage in a useful way may be what I try to build post #phdlife. Right now the medium just creates endless, self-reinforcing ecological nichés for parasitic exploitation by outrage surfers. https://twitter.com/generativist/status/1106544069143072768 …

/ I think there's a dangerous risk of seduction in that you can say, "yes, I'll stop when things change for the better," which means you don't actually have to worry if you're affecting that outcome. You're doing the morally right thing, it doesn't matter if its the correct one.
