Had a somewhat similar one but in my case it was refusing to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. I didn't say it was illegal though, I just said I wouldn't.

Oddly, when I was a kid (back in the 70s), no big deal was made of my not standing for the Pledge of Allegiance. This was in multiple states (MS, GA, PA, MD) because I was a military brat. My mom was either not a citizen or a new citizen, and I just wasn't sure how I felt.

yeah, same with me, there was no overt hassling if you just noped out obviously doing so marked you as outgroup but it was never invoked to justify your status
