my impression is that cast iron skillet people will vengefully murder you if you do anything to their skillet other than briefly and respectfully run some lukewarm water over it, am i mistaken?

the stuff on your pan is not protein. it's highly oxidized and polymerized oil. as far as I know, not carcinogenic at all. if you let charred stuff stick on there, that's probably a little carcinogenic but not a huge deal. like, a grilled steak is more dangerous by far
