One reason I asked is that I'm writing a dissertation chapter on generative possibility spaces, and what to do if you have hard or soft failures. And one dominant strategy is "lean into the tragedy" and embrace unfairness as and aesthetic [cite:caves of qud, dwarf fortress]

It's really central to my philosophy as a designer of playable systems, to create possibility spaces rich enough that I can't anticipate too much of their volumes.
