I remember when I was playing Elder Scrolls Oblivion and I discovered that elemental vulnerability stacked multiplicatively if you put the vulnerability debuff on differently named spells. You can imagine what came next (32x damage multiplication lol)

After playing TYRANNY, I want two things: * that magic system and riffs on it being used in many more RPGs * that magic system being ported to nonmagic fighting for combat maneuvers and dirty tricks

oh man Tyranny was really satisfying in a lot of ways. what a great example of what can be done with the classic isometric RPG. just wish it had a longer main campaign. stretching it out with companion side quests and incoherent DLC shit is bad.

I still really want to combine Spear+Unarmed 'runes' for a trip attack, or spear+axe for a halberd sweep -- a lot of fantasy games have the problem where magic outclasses everything but in TYRANNY it was just so *fun* in addition playing mundanes just felt like missing the point.

Tyranny magic also outclasses everything though. Like, it's cool to make crowd control, healing, and damage all available at the same time for the same character BUT that is not exactly well-balanced gameplay.

certainly -- what I meant was *not only* does it outclass normies but it's *also* just so much more fun to use, effectiveness aside, that not rolling full spellcasters feels like just hosing yourself.

Segueing into general common problems of game design, can you think of any games that make status effects worth troubling with? In general, 'the best status effect is dead' beats debuffs, so the opportunity cost for 'anything that isn't MOAR DAMAGE' is high.

i seem to recall status effects being indispensable in Darkest Dungeon

That's true! Solid example, in that it's not 'immune until gimmick applied' nonsense, but they can make the difference between a survivable fight and a Pyrrhic victory that stops a mission early.

Darkest has a lot of good game design to match its fantastic sound and art design. It's a real ass-kicker, though.

you must propitiate RNGesus with sacrifices of lottery tickets and snapple bottle caps

this is a classic roguelike feel and accounts for most of my nethack hiati. I still remember the ascension-ready monk that taught me about going down stairs, burdened, while wielding a cockatrice corpse. truly a YASD of YASDs.
