Is all the negative attention being heaped on the APA for commenting on psychologically healthy/unhealthy behaviors every bit as dumb as I think it is?

imo much of the criticism of their recent guidelines for psychotherapy with boys and men is justified, though a lot of it is histrionic culture war bullshit. have you read the guidelines yourself? it's a short document.

No, I just saw a response to the criticism portrayed as "circling the wagons" and I read it and thought, "hmm sounds like psychologists promoting psychological health Indon't see the problem here." Also people losing their minds over whatever the original statement was.

Dan listens to the churning atmosphere @danlistenstoI may do a more detailed close textual reading thread of this later but for now I wanted to just post the link and a simple observation. This is new APA guidelines for psychological practice with boys and men. https://www.apa.org/about/policy/boys-men-practice-guidelines.pdf …Show this thread1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -

the document is clearly the product of several intense ideological commitments and to some extent it does really pathologize aspects of maleness that many men would not consider pathological

but I still admire the goals of recognizing the very real and serious mental health problems that are specific to men, or that men are suffering for at greater rates than others. I think the authors were immersed in a groupthink bubble though and it shows.

yeah i got as far as the claim that until the 1970s all psychology was psychology-of-men, which is the kind of absolute over-the-top horseshit you can only say if you literally never speak to anybody whose persecution narrative it doesn't fit, and bounced off, prolly try again
