PKD in his novels had this underground comix sensibility, which meant that even by 50s standards the tech, fashion, & language was goofy. No film adaptation has preserved this better than Total Recall.

Underground comic in the 50s? But yes, Total Recall is the only unironically good Verhoven movie

I don't mean to imply that PKD was even involved in the underground comix scene. Only that, even in his late 50s work, he had the goofy, unfocused, anarchic vibe that this scene & its offshoots embraced.

In both cases, it's probably a side effect of tight deadlines, poor editorial quality control, and heavy use of CNS stimulants. End result is: laughably goofy ideas appear in otherwise serious works, possibly even in prominent roles, & last long enough to become disturbing.

I could see a Vaughn Bodé version of Galactic Pot Healer or something

I'd like to see David Lynch take on a PKD adaptation, because existing adaptations are not just insufficiently goofy but insufficently surreal & insufficiently steeped in americana.

Ubik could be made to look like Twin Peaks, and people would complain about "all those Lynchisms" & we could say "no, actually, that part is in the book".

Or, for the less explicitly science-fictional stuff, Wes Anderson would be a good fit. After all, PKD writes about quirky broken people living is slightly artificial-seeming worlds that are set against them. PKD's worlds are always dirty, but in a Life Aquatic way.

so far in my viewing the episode of Electric Dreams that has nailed this best (better than any other adaptation really) is Crazy Diamond, featuring Steve Buscemi who was absolutely born to play a Dick protag

I'll have to go back to it, then. I went into it expecting that finally somebody would do PKD adaptations that feel like PKD, & the first ~2 episodes disappointed in that regard.

Casting Buschemi is brilliant and indicates exactly the kind of familiarity with PKD I was hoping this show would have.
