if you are Coming Over To Hang Out it would not occur to you to take your shoes off. if someone has Invited You Into Their Nice House not thinking to take your shoes off and making them *ask* you to is the behavior of an unhousebroken monster

Interesting. In my head, Take Off Those Dirty Work Boots and I Spend 500$ On These Shoes I Wear Only Indoors seemed like an equally plausible scenario. (I'm from an uniformly take shoes off culture)

i suspect people who have dirty work boots tend to take them off, what with there being actual perceptible consequences to not doing so, and i seem to vaguely recall hints of a culture of "house shoes" existing but i have no experience of it

come to think of it the Nice Houses might maintain a strong shoes off policy partly as a sop to egalitarianism, so that dirty work boot wearers don't feel like they're being singled out
