honestly jamming all the humans into nutrient fluid pods and pumping their brains full of VR is exactly the kind of thing an AI might do if it had a utility function written to try to make it protect and help humans, and it's a shame that didn't get explored at all in The Matrix

I don't remember the details of the worst sf pitfall of a movie I saw once 20 years ago, but it seemed like they tried "paradise" and then when that didn't work they went for "the 1990s but crapped up". Maybe I missed the iterations down?

the claim is made that paradise was tried; it isn't really gone into right then whether there were or weren't intermediate iterations. later on i seem to recall the Architect implying there had been lots of versions
