*dark matter lifeform voice* hey all! you know what's got n+1 thumbs, a habitation that's even one with your guarded threshold, and a POWERFUL love for individual socks? that's right, this guy! *recursive thumb cascade triggers collapse of local spacetime*

I already had to watch a youtube video about physics to enjoy the novel I'm reading on the bus. Why are you like this, what does this mean, I hate you.

okay, there are a few things to unpack here. we start with the idea that dark matter and dark energy are what spacetime is made of. then we add the idea that where you have matter and energy, you sooner or later have life, which means that juuuust maybe that's, like, fairies

so then in "the people under the hill", "the hill" would be spacetime with its gravitational curvature. such beings would seem to be able to move around the substructure of space without worrying about what's in the superstructure, leading us to the "guarded threshold" line

that's from Lovecraft's "The Dunwich Horror", from a whole murder-wall rant about the "Old Ones", who are described in several ways as having exactly the properties one would expect from a dark matter lifeform. "n+1 thumbs" ofc starts as being part of the framing reference

it crossreferences Lovecraft and the tendency of Lovecrafty things to have lots of tentacles, is also slightly a play on Janet from The Good Place referencing the same schtick with one thumb, and develops a conceit of dark matter lifeforms having mathematically strange properties

the sock thing is, of course, the idea that if we have these guys roaming our houses, they're definitely where missing socks go. we wrap up with a suggestion that when we reach the thumb-pointing part, that forces a collapse of the abstract n+1 thumbs into a concrete quantity

since we wind up with infinite thumbs that way, we humorously envision this resulting in the formation of a singularity do you have further questions?
