incidentally, i've learned that erowid types have appropriated/polluted the concept of ego death so as to map the phrase to psychedelic experiences of oneness with the universe or whatever the fuck. this is wrong. that kind of experience could result in ego death but need not

ego death is when whatever it is about you that you feel makes you you, the foundations of your sense of self, are ripped away from you and smashed. ego death is not a fun trippy experience. you will know it by the fear rising up in you that feels exactly like the fear of death

that's because the morbid fear of death people normally experience turns out to not be the fear of physical death, which isn't actually all that scary; it's the fear of cessation of the self, of this exact experience
