What’s wrong with “purpose”? I see that “design goals” is misleading (implying erm a design with goals), but “the purpose of the heart is pumping blood” seems legit to me? (Perhaps I have Stockholm syndrome from reading Millikan, and no real person uses “purpose” like this?)

(Cards on the table I think Millikan is right about a lot of stuff, which is bewildering, nearly a category error, for a professional philosopher.)

U familiar w/ Darwin’s later work - in which he discounted fitness as the prime selector, instead focused on, well, basically sexiness? Remember Darwin didn’t have a modern concept of gene expression - he realized the obvs that animals fuck what turns ‘em on, not the ‘fittest’.

enough that i was trying to say both natural selection and sexual selection by "selection" lol
