um, but the example does not provide me enough info to determine if "a single person named Bob, who preferred to be referred to as "they", has perished" and "several people have perished", does it?

yeah, and that sucks. While I totally don't support people who make a separate pronoun set for people who like chlorinated latex (as relative to ones who prefer unchlorinated), I totes think English would not implode from addition of ~a~ dedicated gender-indeterminate pronoun.
