consider the sentence form "<Name> <verb>, then <pronoun> <verb>." with he/him/his pronouns, that might be "Bob smiles, then he dies." with they/them/their pronouns, it becomes "Bob smiles, then they die." same referent, different verb cases in same sentence

um, but the example does not provide me enough info to determine if "a single person named Bob, who preferred to be referred to as "they", has perished" and "several people have perished", does it?
