the virtual reality that sucks people in until they die won't be the "realistic environment" kind, people will take that or leave it the no-one-escapes kind will be the kind with entities you can converse with who will gently absorb and mirror your way of understanding the world

I might just be dense but I don’t quite get what you mean here, are you describing a system populated by nonhuman entities, a curated filter bubble of likeminded people, or something else entirely? Realistic meaning visually or in terms of challenge/reward/narrative structure?

system populated by nonhuman entities; like if Eliza bots didn't suck realistic meaning visually/perceptually. nobody wants realistic challenge/reward/narrative structure, if we wanted that we'd just play some IRL

I feel like asking for bots to not suck might be a taller order than we think but I am not up on the cutting edge of NLP ML etc. Do you see this scenario playing out in the next couple of decades and do you imagine elements of multiplayer present in an experience like this?

i'm not really trying to be rigorously predictive tbh i think it's more likely that we won't see this in the next couple decades than that we will this will probably arise in a multiplayer environment that people wind up using in such a fashion as to avoid all human contact
