As per the paper: equality is enforced as a group norm (this manifests as "don't overstep your position" rhetoric), while ostracization is a tactic deployed (often by high status individuals but sometimes by groups of low status ones) to remove individuals from the group.

So a kind of elimination of competition?

If she can't be neutralized, yes. Source: My friends and I were sociopaths in middle school

A harsh truth everyone experiences. I think I employed a self-imposed ostracization in middle school, where I looked like a punk lesbian. Perhaps it was a mechanism to drive off competition, a female version of 'the sneaky fucker' strategy.

Interesting, I was (as a man) ostracized growing up & now I have pathological issues around belonging to groups.

I am very sorry that happened to you. Young people are unspeakably cruel to their peers and it's particularly hard to stomach at that age. (Not that adults don't suck too)

It's okay, that's actually where I wanted to go with that fact about myself anyway: maybe this is a common trend around here, do other people have similar experiences? What was the longterm effect? Thank you for the sympathy tho :)

yes and yes. another potential longterm effect is skepticism of socially enforced messaging. it has a certain smell to it and it's very easy for me for tell when something is being said for purposes of social enforcement instead of information sharing.

any group of people that hasn't turned on me is still working out the basis on which it will turn on me, that's obvious

I pretty much just live entirely to see how much damage I can do to my life through my failed associations with other people, at this point.
