the professor who plays at implementing Plato's Republic by telling you the version of the truth which he thinks will make you the most virtuous does not less fancy himself your master than the jackbooted thug

How do you feel about the sort of tactics advocated in "Nudge" by
@CassSunstein and@R_Thaler? eg. Changing organ donation default so you have to opt-out rather than opt-in results in many more people choosing to be (presumably more virtuous) organ donors.2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -
that seems like a lovely idea though it's orthogonal to the question of anybody being virtuous it doesn't involve misrepresenting anything, we can accurately say that our best guess is that after you are dead you will not care what happens to your organs

So, how would you describe someone *declining* to be an organ donor, if not as lacking in virtue? For the sake of argument, let's say their reason isn't religious, it's aesthetic: the thought of having any of their organs harvested after their demise squicks them out.

sure they're lacking in virtue, for various popular values of virtue. they don't have to be virtuous. it's their choice. and they shouldn't be compelled or coerced to act as if they were virtuous, including by deception
