I'd rather be misled than have my head stomped on.
#duh -
and that's how they getcha, innit which one do you think heals faster
-
So you'd rather have thugs physically enslave you than have old guys bullshit you?
-
how is it in any way unclear that i would be super into having neither
-
You setup the choice of one or the other. Obviously we'd rather have unicorn massages.
-
right, except i actually didn't observing two things isn't setting up a binary choice between them

How do you feel about the sort of tactics advocated in "Nudge" by
@CassSunstein and@R_Thaler? eg. Changing organ donation default so you have to opt-out rather than opt-in results in many more people choosing to be (presumably more virtuous) organ donors. -
that seems like a lovely idea though it's orthogonal to the question of anybody being virtuous it doesn't involve misrepresenting anything, we can accurately say that our best guess is that after you are dead you will not care what happens to your organs
-
So, how would you describe someone *declining* to be an organ donor, if not as lacking in virtue? For the sake of argument, let's say their reason isn't religious, it's aesthetic: the thought of having any of their organs harvested after their demise squicks them out.
-
sure they're lacking in virtue, for various popular values of virtue. they don't have to be virtuous. it's their choice. and they shouldn't be compelled or coerced to act as if they were virtuous, including by deception

Your choice is between 'this is what I think is true', 'this is what I hope is true', 'this is what is best for you to believe', and 'this is what is best for me for you to believe', and 'this would make me laugh if you actually bought it'. So the prof. is squarely in the middle.
-
though 'this is what is best for you to believe' is basically always 'this is what is best for me for you to believe'
-
I honestly think the first one is usually done in favor of some (flawed) perception of what the world needs, not the self trying to gain something. Like: There are billionaires that campaign for higher taxes, though it's only loss for them. They think it's right for the world.
-
oh for sure yeah
-
There's still an element of enlightened self interest though – that higher-taxes world is one in which they prefer to live in (more funding for arts and science, well maintained infrastructure, lower odds of the proles lining them up against the wall, etc.), even with less money.

If coercion by our circumstances is unavoidable, shouldn't we want to be coerced in ways that benefit us? Isn't it preferable to be coerced into wellbeing? If true, doesn't negate your point.
-
people's ideas about what constitutes wellbeing in another person are somewhat famously disparate with their ideas about what constitutes wellbeing in themselves
