Can you please explain the meta-level versus object? I'm currently thinking "being objectified can make me powerful!" but possibly I'm high on pain meds.

If I had to guess, I'd say it is "I am skilled with objects" (swords, knives, lockpicks; individual issues) versus "I am skilled with the ruleset we operate on" (magic; bureaucracy, principles, "rules of engagement").
