periodic reminder that Harry Potter is the story of a war between the members of a secret ruling class who heroically believe that anybody born with the right genes to enter it belongs in it and the members who believe you need the right genes *and* a pedigreed source for them

Banks is about "let's have an ultratech space anarchosyndicalist utopia that is literally the best we could possibly do and, while enjoying that tremendously, also examine how it's still super fucked up"

Never thought of my stuff as dark. Except maybe AGYAR. Not saying you're wrong; this really is a case where the author is probably not the best authority.
-
i mean, from a socialist perspective, there being a socialist revolution every 17 epic calendrical cycles that inevitably goes horribly wrong and is crushed and replaced with imperial monarchy again is arguably dark

-
I can see the argument. (In fact, it is a bourgeois democratic revolution, but your point is still valid.)
-
Either I’m confused about which revolution, or confused that Teckla are bourgeois.
-
The Teckla are petty bourgeois (peasantry); but the republic they create attempts to move economic power into the hands of the bourgeoisie, using democratic forms. This fails for many reasons, not the least of which is there is only just barely a bourgeoisie at all.
-
… I always thought of Teckla as working class, not bourgeois…
-
Some of them are, relatively few. Most are peasants. I mean, they make up most of the proletariat, but the proletariat is tiny.
