periodic reminder that Harry Potter is the story of a war between the members of a secret ruling class who heroically believe that anybody born with the right genes to enter it belongs in it and the members who believe you need the right genes *and* a pedigreed source for them

It's the same premise behind so much fantasy genre writing, As a lifelong socialist, I just can't read this stuff.

As a lifelong socialist...any authors you can recommend, please? So much writing today seems to be heavily libertarian.

Also Starhawk, The Fifth Sacred Thing, and its prequel, Walking to Mercury, and sequel, City of Refuge. The prequel is a very different style, though, so skip it if it doesn't work for you.

tbf Brust does a good job of keeping the books relatively free of it, other than That One Book; as for too much libertarian SF, good lord, where? Fascist power fantasies, crypto or otherwise, abound, but now that the brain eater got Stross, liberty-liking sf is hard to find

Iron Council rules. If you dig it, Perdido Street Station and The Scar are the first two books in the series, and examining the evolution of the governmental clampdown into total control of the city of New Crobuzon between Perdido and Iron Council is haunting.

Iron Council is very very good, but I'd strongly recommend reading Perdido Street Station first to get a better grasp of the setting. OTOH, The Scar is fun but very much optional. Good call on Player of Games. To be followed by Use of Weapons.

Although Iain M Banks is very much SF, not fantasy. With the partial exception of Inversions (which is good, but not his very best).
