periodic reminder that Harry Potter is the story of a war between the members of a secret ruling class who heroically believe that anybody born with the right genes to enter it belongs in it and the members who believe you need the right genes *and* a pedigreed source for them

it could be worse, i guess, she did explain it in just one sentence on pottermore. stephenson would've had 15 pages on the history of wizard shit in the middle of book 2
-
heinlein would have explained plumbing
-
at least if it's actually in the book we're spared having plumbing explained in the form of an anecdote about Doc Smith
-
otoh 200 pages later there would be a callback from a young genius girl who is contemptuous of our hero's primitive understanding of plumbing but pity-fucks him anyway
-
i actually only ever read one heinlein novel and it was one of the ones for kids but luckily that probably would also apply to 75% of other male sci-fi writers after 1960
