the fun part of programmatically handling the singular they is its property of pseudoplurality: you'd say "Bob is happy" or "they are happy" referring to the same person, i.e. the conjugation of your verbs depends on whether you have a pronoun antecedent

that's the "collective" gender which uses plural they, not the "nonspecific" gender which uses singular they
