the fun part of programmatically handling the singular they is its property of pseudoplurality: you'd say "Bob is happy" or "they are happy" referring to the same person, i.e. the conjugation of your verbs depends on whether you have a pronoun antecedent

it is elegant, but i don't think the plural forms actually are less marked, i think the formation is just being controlled by the conditioned expected formation attached to "they"
