"there's something wrong with the world" is the heart of punk when punk goes curdled it arrives at "it's the Jews" when cyberpunk goes curdled it arrives at "it's the technology"

Cyberpunk/CP2020 and Shadowrun's Humanity and Essence were RPG-character-balance driven mechanics that couldn't hope to escape the gravitational pull of culturally ingrained "what if phones but too much" technology panic and were enormous genre-polluting mistakes

Granted that I know your biases already. Don't you think it's still interesting to explore the spectrum of possible reactions to transhumanism? Especially in interactive fiction we should see multiple perspectives on core themes.
-
exploring the spectrum sounds nice? exploring "GROG NO MAKE FIRE GROG PLAY GOD" one more time sounds tedious as shit
-
some frequencies in the spectrum are hypersaturated
-
Ok so cyberpunk is a dead genre then?
-
not at all, i'd just like to see more than the same damn primitivist kneejerk take
-
omg marc whipple did you just "so write your own story sjw" me

Interjection: I swear this conversation happened days ago. I very distinctly remember it happening. But no...two hours ago. Wtf human brain.

Dev’s right though. Losing oneself is an integral part of cyberpunk. This game is looking up.
-
losing yourself is integral, looking down your nose at people losing themselves from a sacralist-primitivist standpoint not so much
-
Looks like the point is that the main character saves her regardless.
-
yeah saving the unfortunates, very noble, maybe she can be dropped off at the nearest Cyber Magdalene Laundry
-
It is noble. You don’t wash their feet because they’re actually clean, you wash their feet regardless of dirtiness.
-
the pure unaugmented being intrinsically positioned to wash the feet of the corrupt augmented is what makes this sound more like trenchcoat opera than cyberpunk
-
If that’s the case then I agree. I thought the main character was chromed up.
-
prolly is, just relatively uncorrupt compared to this character who needs to be rescued? ugh, probably it's not their fault, likely have to think this way if you're working off the R. Talsorian Cyberpunk RPG license and have to have their awful Humanity/Cyberpsychosis mechanic

Wow but that’s literally the point of.. oh never mind
-
is it though
-
I mean originally. But now we are in the worst of all possible postmodern bullshit worlds so who knows what cyberpunk even is?
-
that's really what you got from Burning Chrome, Neuromancer, Hardwired, Islands in the Net, Schismatrix, Snow Crash? "technology is bad and we should have put a halt to it in favor of maintaining the primitive sense of self as sacrosanct"?
-
No. I think I was mocking the same people you were originally. I think there’s tension in the sense of definitional humanity but hell if we should stop the world because of it.
-
oh sorry about the misparse. (i had just gotten the take i read you as having in a different reply, lol.) yes please conflict about what it means to be human! no thank you primitivist pearl-clutching!
-
I mean I guess it’s interesting to see meta-takes on cyberpunk 30 years later but I feel like one should at least understand the source before making a hot take....
