He was punished because striking the stone merely than invoking God’s name made the miracle seem to be his work rather than God’s, not the injury due to the Stone.

it was to get water, but no, in Numbers 20:8 God quite clearly tells him to talk to the rock and then in Numbers 20:11 he beats on it because apparently he knows so much more about sorcery than God
