OK gonna start tagging all my rambling about Nordic mythology into #lokiposting
First of all.
Canonically Loki is not Odin's son, he's actually the son of two giants, though Marvel making him Odin's son adds more strife, and Odin IS the Allfather...
Does Loki call Odin "daddy"?

Secondly, giants are intriguing, since they seem to inherently have many unusual attributes. Gylfaganning XLII references the "giant's rage" as a discrete item, and Loki's shapeshifting powers seem to stem mainly from his heritage, since other giants shapeshift too.

It seems to me that hrimthursar (rime-giants) basically, as entities of storm and ice, occupy a role that would be named in other cosmologies as "elementals" or something. If I was designing a fantasy world I'd definitely prefer them over "blob of water" elementals.

on http://lostsouls.org i translated D&D stone giants, cloud giants, storm giants, and hill giants into felljotnar, skaijotnar, sturmjotnar (love this word a lot), and bergrisar, and then added myrrisar because who doesn't want swamp giants
