      a lot of people believe in single point of return i was really happy when the term "guard clauses" was invented, since it's impossible to defend any practice unless there's a trendy buzzword for it

          I'm with @f_borretti here. nested conditionals at least let you treat the entire block as a single expression, which i find easier to reason about. if it gets ridiculously excessive, that's usually a sign that you could break it down into separate functions.
