MC being superficially a likeable asshole (unless you hate those in which case he's an unbelievably grating asshole) and actually casually destroying people's lives *without noticing*, and being supported in this, imo is there to point up the jenseits gut und bose of the setting

the fractal asymptote of techne will put a billion amazing things in front of you every day and as hard as it will be to notice and appreciate any of them you should definitely try while you can because the instant you stumble you'll be crushed underfoot and harvested for protein
