the endgame where Discourse actually increases human freedom, which the right is now catching up to the left's long experience working toward, is the one where fractal factionalism over increasingly obscure points keeps any ideology from growing too large to drown in a bathtub

the solution to two-party US electoral politics isn't to forge a party large enough to challenge the Democrats and Republicans, it's to peel people off the Democrats and Republicans until you can challenge them with the attendance of a largish birthday party

this is already the trend (accept in the Media, which is more partisan than ever) but needs to accelerate as much as possible. in some states there are already more people who are "unaffiliated" than members of any party.

presidential year election turnouts are stuck at around 60%, midterms and off years much lower. the non-voters alone, if they voted as a block (unlikely but bear with me) could beat the typical turnout of either of the major parties.

Sanders won about 44% of the Democrat primary vote. it's reasonable to expect about that proportion of either major party voters to defect if given a good alternative.

a major party candidate can win in a 2 party vote with about 60 million votes (in the right states of course, electoral college blah). can they win with 35 million votes? can a third party candidate get > 35 million votes? Perot got 19 million (on a smaller electorate)

I really think breaking the duopoly is more attainable than it seems. people are fed up. the numbers work out. internet crowdfunding provides the cash needed to do it. it could happen soon in my estimate. 2020 is gonna be a hell of a ride.
