all kinds of meanings and identity can, it just takes the balls to make choices and take stands without claims of eternal significance to give one the epistemic equivalent of Dutch courage

I agree, but I also think you need bigger (different?) balls now. The systems and identities that can survive serious encounters with today's insights are esoteric, obscure, complex: lonely. Courage is the correct attitude, but I feel sympathy for those who won't make the leap.
