like, okay, sure: pomo philosopher: "there is no external source of meaning that could make one system of understanding inherently superior to another" pomo grifter: "all systems of understanding are equal in value!" pomo grifter: "science conspiracy made phlogiston not work!"

contestants number two and three are obviously not great, but they don't make contestant number one wrong, any more than any epistemic claim has its value defined by the most ridiculous shit done using it as an excuse

and yes, i did call Paul Feyerabend a pomo grifter just now, and i'm comfortable with that

enh, are they really, though? these are people who love to talk about "being on the right side of history", and it's hard to see how anyone who talks like that hasn't ignored or rejected the most basic of pomo shit

i mean, not for nothin', but this sounds more than a little like the "<snarl word> means whatever i don't like" that dominates the discourse around "capitalism" and "socialism" and "cynicism"
-
like, i appreciate being annoyed by unreflective tribalism, but i guarantee you unreflective tribalism predates postmodern philosophy and owes nothing in particular to it

i look forward to viciously ostracizing people from this group at the merest hint of tribalism

Should read "imagine clinging so desperately to trad bullshit **because** the basic insights vaguely grouped under "postmodernism" are a threat to you", but yeah, pretty much. The basic insights really are genuinely serious meaning and identity threats though.
-
i guess i'm just so damn pomo that it seems obvious to me that if your meaning and identity can't survive contact with obviously true observations then they shouldn't survive
-
That part seems obvious to me too. But it isn't that clear to me what kind of meanings and identity *can* survive that contact. The parts that clearly can are also deflated, unnatural things that take a tremendous amount of rational (and irrational) personal effort to sustain.
-
all kinds of meanings and identity can, it just takes the balls to make choices and take stands without claims of eternal significance to give one the epistemic equivalent of Dutch courage
-
I agree, but I also think you need bigger (different?) balls now. The systems and identities that can survive serious encounters with today's insights are esoteric, obscure, complex: lonely. Courage is the correct attitude, but I feel sympathy for those who won't make the leap.
