"Our young people do not need to be policed, they need to be reached"-. He should have stopped at the comma. Here's response from last week to NYPD's new "youth initiative", by Andrea Colon/

  2. In says “Our young people don’t need to be policed, they need to be reached.” How about we actually start with a budget that reflects that? Just 12¢ for youth & community development for every dollar spent on NYPD & corrections in his 2020 budget.

A city's budget reflects its priorities. Unfortunately 's budgets have prioritized policing and incarceration over investment in critical community safety infrastructure & services. We need to REPRIORITIZE.

de Blasio's state of the city starting soon. Would be great if he'd address why his administration's dollars prioritize criminalization (eg NYPD & Corrections) instead of community safety infrastructure (ie areas that help build safe/strong communities).

Ridiculous! Imagine if we invested more in people, in real safety instead of police. Across all five boroughs, the city paid about $68 million in 2019 to settle lawsuits against police, an increase of about $30 million compared to 2018.

. is right: passing marked a major step forward for NY and ensuring justice for Black and Brown communities. This is not a time for a roll-back. It’s time to keep moving forward to ensure justice for communities.

I was proud to stand with my colleague Assembly Member and advocates like to call for transparency, and demand justice for the families of those impacted by Section 50-a.

I’m proud to sponsor the bill which would fully repeal Section 50-a, a law whose recent interpretations have made it unrecognizable. The expansion has even led to the original author - a Republican Senator - to admit the legislature should act.

We believe that NY public policy should be grounded in justice and evidence. Thank you for holding strong in the face of fearmongering and for fighting against rollbacks that will hurt our communities.

It's time to pass the Police Statistics & Transparency Act. I sponsor A5472 for common-sense accountability & transparency: ✅Require P.D. to record & report data on enforcement of low-level offenses ✅Require public reporting of deaths in police custody
